New Playwork Pathway Helps Denbighshire Young People Re-engage and Succeed

Young People in Denbighshire Thrive Through Playwork Programme

Young people in Denbighshire are building confidence, developing new skills and exploring future careers thanks to an innovative Playwork training programme delivered by Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs.

The Level 1 Pathway to Playwork and Practice, delivered in partnership with Denbighshire County Council through Community Focused Schools funding, offers a supportive alternative for young people who may have struggled within mainstream education.

Over four months, learners took part in a mix of personal development, practical learning and work placements. Many joined with low confidence, anxiety or difficulties engaging in school, but through a nurturing and flexible Playwork approach, they began to grow in confidence, form positive relationships and re-engage with learning.

The impact has been significant. Learners who were initially withdrawn became active participants, contributing ideas, working as part of a team and supporting their peers. They developed improved communication skills, emotional resilience and a more positive outlook for the future.

Work placements in Playwork settings gave learners valuable hands-on experience supporting children’s play and introduced them to the role of a Playworker. For some, this sparked a genuine interest in pursuing a career in the sector.

Reflecting on the programme, one support worker said:
“The young people came in as seeds and blossomed into flowers.”

The success of the programme highlights how targeted, supportive provision can transform outcomes for young people while helping to build the future Out of School Childcare and Playwork workforce.
