Encouraging Outdoor Play

Playing is one of the most important parts of children’s lives. It is fundamental to children’s physical, mental, social and emotional health and wellbeing. As part of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Children have a right to play and as Playworkers we act as a play advocate. Through outdoor play, children are given the opportunity to develop resilience, test their physical capabilities, express themselves and build their self-confidence all this contributes to their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Outdoor play encourages children to be able to;

  • Use their creativity and find out what they really like
  • Discover and act on their own interests, ideas and passions
  • Take physical risks in a gradual way, building up what they are capable of doing
  • Work collaboratively with other children of different ages and learn how to share, negotiate and resolve conflicts.
