Christmas Around the World Play Passport Activity
Children will ‘travel’ to different countries and explore how Christmas is celebrated through themed play stations. Each station represents a country and includes a simple festive activity (craft, song, game, or food-related pretend play). Children get a stamp or sticker in their play passport after visiting each one.

Play Across Cultures: A Global Christmas Snapshot
United Kingdom
In many UK homes and childcare settings, Christmas play often features beloved activities such as making paper chains, decorating gingerbread men, or engaging in festive role play—transforming into elves, reindeer, or even Santa! Pantomimes and nativity plays are also cherished traditions during this joyful season, adding a delightful mix of drama and humour that bring everyone together to celebrate tradition.
Mexico – Las Posadas
Children in Mexico celebrate Las Posadas, a nine-night festival leading up to Christmas. They often take part in parades and performances, reenacting the journey of Mary and Joseph. Traditional games like piñata breaking add a joyful and energetic twist to the celebrations.
Sweden – St. Lucia’s Day
On December 13th, children take part by dressing in white robes and singing traditional songs. Play during this time often includes pretend baking of Lucia buns (saffron-flavoured treats) and making star hats and candle crowns in arts and crafts.
Australia & New Zealand
With Christmas falling in summer, children in Australia and New Zealand enjoy outdoor play, from beach cricket to festive picnics. Craft sessions might involve creating decorations using natural materials like shells or leaves, blending creativity with the environment.
Ethiopia – Ganna
In Ethiopia, children play a traditional game called “Ye Gena Chewata”, similar to hockey, as part of Ganna, the Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas celebrated in early January. This energetic game is played in the spirit of community and celebration.
Across Wales
Christmas celebrations are often filled with joyful Welsh-language festivities, including storytelling and singing carols (carolau). Children usually get to enjoy traditional games and craft activities, creating a warm, lively atmosphere that helps them learn Welsh in a fun and festive way.
The role of play in cultural understanding
Play isn’t just a source of happiness during the holidays; it’s also a wonderful way to help children learn about the rich variety of traditions celebrated around the world. When children explore how different cultures honour Christmas, they grow in empathy, curiosity, and respect for others. Engaging in activities like dressing up, cooking, storytelling, and making music allows them to learn through fun experiences and using their imagination.
Celebrating what unites us
While customs may differ, the essence of Christmas—togetherness, kindness, and joy—remains the same across the world. By embedding global traditions into festive play, we give children the opportunity to celebrate both their own culture and the richness of others. Enabling all community members to be included in the festive celebrations.
As practitioners, parents, and Playworkers, let’s use this season not only to bring laughter and creativity into children’s lives but also to spark curiosity, inclusivity, and understanding—one playful moment at a time.
