Shwmae Sumae Day
Diwrnod Shwmae Sumae is an annual celebration held on October 15th in Wales to promote the use of the Welsh language in everyday life. It’s a day for people of all ages and backgrounds, whether fluent or beginners, to greet each other with “Shwmae” (How are you?) or “Sumae” (Hi) and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Welsh language. The aim is to make Welsh more accessible and encourage everyone to use it, no matter their level of fluency.
To all out-of-school childcare providers: We invite you to join the fun and celebrate Diwrnod Shwmae Sumae! It’s a wonderful opportunity to introduce Welsh greetings and simple phrases into your daily activities, helping children engage with the language in a fun, inclusive way. Whether through games, songs, or just saying “Shwmae” to one another, let’s make this day extra special and show how vibrant and welcoming the Welsh language can be!
Don’t Forget!
If you are signed up to the Welsh promise – make sure to collect evidence of your setting celebrating Diwrnod Shwmae Sumae and send to your Welsh Language Childcare Business Development Officer!
