The Raising the Nation Play Commission inquiry warns play is being squeezed out of children’s lives

A national conversation about how to encourage and support children to play more. The ‘Raising the Nation Play Commission’, will move play up the political agenda.   

Reseach has been undertaken into children’s play and how to encourage children to play more, it examines issues such as the growth if technology, the importance of outdoor space and how parents attitudes to play have changed.   

The Raising the Nation Play Commission wants to make play a central part of childhood again.   

Some of the findings show:  

  • Britain’s children are becoming unhealthier  
  • One in six have mental health problems  
  • 53% of children have a mobile phone by the age of 7 
  • Compared to the 1970s, children now spend 50% less time on unstructured outdoor play.
