100 Poppies, 100 Ways to Remember!

This Remembrance Day, why not challenge your club to create 100 poppies, with each one as unique as the child who makes it?

Provide a range of loose parts and recycled materials for children to explore. Fabric, buttons, bottle tops, cardboard, wool, natural materials and other open-ended resources can all be used to create poppies in whatever way children choose. There is no right or wrong way to take part.

A Moment to Reflect

Remembrance Day can be an opportunity to reflect on the people, places and things that matter to us, while remembering those who worked, served and sacrificed to help secure many of the freedoms we enjoy today.

Invite children to think about something they are grateful for. It might be their family, friends, community, nature, feeling safe, being able to learn, play, share their ideas, or simply having the freedom to be themselves.

Children may choose to write, draw, talk about their thoughts or express them through their creations.

This can also provide an opportunity to explore children’s rights and freedoms, helping them recognise the importance of being listened to, feeling included, having opportunities to play, and sharing their views and opinions.

Create a Shared Display

Bring the poppies and children’s reflections together to create a colourful display celebrating remembrance, gratitude, freedom and hope.

Can your club reach 100 poppies?

Every poppy will be different, and every contribution will add something special to the display.

Offer a wide variety of materials and allow children to decide if, how and when they would like to participate. Following children’s ideas and interests supports creativity, ownership and meaningful participation. Remember, it’s the process, not the finished product, that matters.

Take time to listen to children’s thoughts, stories and ideas as they create. Their contributions can provide valuable insights into what matters most to them, and help practitioners reflect on how their club supports children’s wellbeing, participation, sense of belonging and rights.

100 Poppies. 100 Different Creations. 100 Unique Voices.

A shared opportunity to remember, give thanks and reflect on the importance of peace, freedom, children’s rights and the things that help us all thrive.
