Awareness Days

October is Black History Month in the UK, making it a great opportunity to think about how Black history, culture and experiences are represented in your club.

Rather than limiting Black history to one month, why not use October as an opportunity to look at your club’s resources and ask:

“Can every child see themselves represented here?”

Take a look at your books, posters, dolls, figures, games, artwork and role-play resources.

Are there opportunities for children to see Black people represented in a wide range of roles and experiences – not just when talking about racism or historical events?

You could also invite children and families to recommend books, music, stories, games or foods that are important to them.

Remember: celebrating diversity works best when it becomes part of everyday provision rather than something that happens only on particular awareness days.

October also sees Show Racism the Red Card’s Month of Action, another opportunity to have age-appropriate conversations about fairness, respect and challenging racism.
