Article of the month – UNCRC To a good standard of living (Article 27)
Article 27 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) states that every child has the right to a standard of living that supports their physical, mental, spiritual, moral, and social development.
Children should have access to the basic things they need to grow up healthy and safe, such as:
- Nutritious food
- Safe and suitable housing
- Clean clothing
- Healthcare and wellbeing support
Parents and carers have the main responsibility for providing a good standard of living for their children. Governments must support families, especially those who may struggle financially, by offering services, benefits, and assistance where needed.
Out of School Childcare Clubs play a significant part of supporting this right for each child that attends, ensuring health and wellbeing through exercise and play experiences are provided as well as healthy, nutritious snacks or meals whilst they are in the club.
Having an all–round good standard of living helps children:
- Stay healthy and develop properly
- Feel safe and secure
- Have equal opportunities to learn and succeed
- Build confidence and wellbeing
This might include:
- Ensuring children have warm homes and enough food
- Providing access to education, play, and community activities
- Supporting families through financial help or social services
Article 27 ensures that every child has what they need to thrive, and that families are supported so children can grow up in safe, healthy, and caring environments.
